Why Is Heat Shrink Tubing Used for Electrical Applications?

 

If you’re an electrician, you probably know what heat shrink tubing is. If not, this is the blog post for you. Heat shrink tubing, in a nutshell, is a shrinkable tube that can be made out of some some sort of plastic or a fluoropolymer. Fluoropolymers are flurocarbon-based polymers. If you are looking for the best material out there for strength, UV resistance, and chemical inertness, fluoropolymers are the way to go. Heat shrink tubing can be made out of nylon as well.

Heat shrink tubing is most often used to insulate wires. As you probably know, you don’t want exposed wiring as it will be prone to damage. Heat shrink tubing can provide abrasion resistance and overall protection. They can used for stranded and solid wire conductors and other electrical components. In addition to overall protection, heat shrink tubing can also be used to repair wires with minor abrasions and to bundle them together for added protection.

There are several different methods you can use to heat shrink the tubing. While some people use the oven, this not recommended for larger parts. Most professionals would recommend that you use a heat gun instead. Regarding the material you should use, you may want to consider using FEP; FEP is a fluoropolymer, which we described above. Here are a few things to know about FEP heat shrink tubing:

  • It acts as a shield for electrical components.
  • It give hydraulic hoses abrasion protection.
  • It can act as a anti-fouling barrier for food industry equipment, chemical equipment, and paint equipment.
  • It can also used as a cover for heat exchangers, temperature probes, and rolls.
